PALEOCHRISTIAN BASILICA VEGA DEL MAR, SAN PEDRO DE ALCáNTARA, MALAGA MARBELLA

Visit to the paleochristian basilica vega del mar

Archaeological site of one of the few Visigothic churches (6th century) of North African type built on the peninsula. The set is formed by a basilica and a necropolis associated with it.

It is located in San Pedro de Alcántara next to Linda Vista Beach and next to Las Termas Romanas de Las Bóvedas.

The temple is formed by a central body of three naves separated by pillars, the most prominent feature being the existence of two opposing apses, whose function would be the altar and martirium.

Next to the westernmost apse, we find the baptistery that houses several baptismal batteries. It highlights a carving in a single stone with an exterior shape of fish, of clear Christian symbolism. It is four-lobed in its interior with the seven steps that correspond to the seven degrees of the mystery of the Holy Spirit described later by St. Isidore.

In the same place is an extensive burial necropolis that extends from the Empire to the seventh century.
